PHILADELPHIA – The Yankees are one victory away from winning the World Series for the first time since 2000. After rallying to beat the Phillies, 7-4, the Yankees can win their 27th World Series with a victory in Game 5 on Monday night.
The Phillies tied the game with two outs in the eighth inning, Pedro Feliz’s homer off Joba Chamberlain in, but the Yankees scored three runs off Brad Lidge in the top of the ninth inning, all with two outs.
Johnny Damon singled, Mark Teixeira was beaten by a pitch, Alex Rodriguez doubled to left and Jorge Posada singled home the final two races. That was enough of a cushion of Mariano Rivera, who has never flown in three runs in the opportunity to save the World Series.
The Yankees now enjoy a commanding 3-1 lead in games, and the 40 teams that have won Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead, 34 have gone on to win the World Series.
C.C. Sabathia, pitching for the second time in the postseason in only three days rest, pitched well, allowing three runs in six and two thirds innings.
