It explores a well-worn subject with sly humor and insight, wisely avoiding clichés (no one sleeps with their secretary or begins riding a Harley).
But “Men of a Certain Age” is hardly rippling with testosterone, like many of the dude-centric shows on basic cable (see: “Sons of Anarchy;” “Rescue Me.”) In one scene, Romano’s character has a father-son talk with his boy about anxiety. The soundtrack is filled with long-lost AM Gold nuggets like “Reflections of My Life” by Marmalade. “That’s all I have on my iPod,” Romano said. “It’s kind of a lame iPod. It’s all classic rock, it’s soft rock, it’s Neil Sedaka, it’s Chicago, it’s Air Supply.” The cultural references skew ’70s, too (one episode revolves loosely around the vigilante film “Billy Jack”).
In other words, it’s the kind of quietly intelligent adult show you pray finds an audience. Speakeasy talked with Mike Royce — who worked with Romano as a writer on “Raymond” and co-created “Men” with him — about what life is like on the other side of 40. Men Of A Certain Age
