Difficult commutes and cancelled flights: Heavy snow sparks chaos in Washington D.C.
Snowy weather hits East Coast and emergency has been declared in the country’s capital, Washington D.C.
According to the details, a major snowstorm has hit East Coast and it has been predicted that it may sock Washington D.C. with 10 to 20 inches of snow. City Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has declared a snow emergency which will be effective from 7 a.m. Saturday. He says the snowstorm is ‘perhaps the biggest’ the city has seen in years. He said that his officials will try to keep the roads and business open during the last weekend before Christmas. National Weather Service has forecasted that wind gusts and heavy snowfall may cause a whiteout condition on Saturday afternoon. Washington is one of the largest cities which are expected to be hit by the monstrous winter storm. Other cities which have been put under snow warnings include Baltimore and Maryland.
The mayor has urged the residents to stay indoors during the storm which is expected to end by Sunday. Announcing the snow emergency, the mayor said that the roads of the Washington city will be cleaned before rush hour on Monday and also noted that rail system will run according to schedule with slight adjustments. In Washington D.C., above-ground rail service will be suspended if snow accumulates more than 8 inches but under-ground service will remain active. On Saturday, both rail services were running normal, however, bus service was running only on emergency routes.
Airport officials have asked the travelers to keep on checking the schedules before. On Saturday, many flights were cancelled in airports along the East Coast. President Obama’s flight, which was returning from Copenhagen, landed amid heavy snow in Maryland.
While the snow emergency was being announced in Washington, the Senators, undaunted by the snow, continued working in the important business and passed a spending bill for defense department.
